.69 caliber, 42" barrel, bright finish, walnut stock. Standard Springfield lock markings, dated 1852, barrel dated 1851 and with usual V/P/Eagle Head markings. Clear JAS cartouche on counterpane of stock. Bore rifled with three lands and grooves, long range 1855 pattern rear sight, original brass front sight. Sling swivels, iron trumpet head ramrod with convex tip. Some 9,929 US M-1842 muskets were rifled and sighted at Springfield Arsenal between 1856 and 1859, with an additional 4,363 rifled only in 1858 without rear sights added. The rifled & sighted guns received a new steel front sight, riveted to the front strap of the upper barrel band. This gun appears to be one of those 4,363 that were rifled only and has subsequently had the correct pattern rear sight added. The correct rifled front sight is not present, and the ramrod is not cupped for elongated ball ammunition. Condition: Very good. Metal cleaned to bright with scattered light pitting present, mostly around the breech and muzzle areas. Metal with some darker age staining present as well. Mechanically functional, good bore with strong rifling and light pitting. Lower sling swivel replaced. Stock very fine with crisp edges and a fine cartouche.
