MOLL, Herman. A New and Correct Map of the World Laid Down According to the Newest Discoveries and from the Most Exact Observations . [London:] J. Bowles, T. Bowles, P. Overton, and John King n.d. [ca 1720].
MOLL, Herman. A New and Correct Map of the World Laid Down According to the Newest Discoveries and from the Most Exact Observations . [London:] J. Bowles, T. Bowles, P. Overton, and John King n.d. [ca 1720]. Engraved map, on two joined sheets, (635 x 1005 mm), hand-colored in outline, title within banner along top, central cartouche with dedication to King George, the Ptolemean Systeme and the Copernican Systeme at upper corners, the seven heavenly bodies of the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter according to Cassini at lower corners, and an inset map of the North Pole at center (a few very minor wormholes, some minor soiling, a few repairs on verso). Matted and framed. Moll's double-hemisphere world map, in which he includes wind directions based on scientific evidence, shows California as an island, and a partially mapped Australia and New Zealand. Moll explains various aspects of the map in several sections of text, and in one he criticizes his competitors, particularly the French cartographer Nicolas Sanson "...whose maps, have been condemned, and found to be notoriously false, even by the Royal Academy, and others of his own country..."
