MONROE, JAMES, President. Autograph letter signed ("Jas. Monroe") as Secretary of State, to Moses Abbott; Washington, D.C., 2 November 1815. 1 page, 4to [ with ] Autograph free frank as Secretary of State ("Dept. of State Jas Monroe") on cover sheet addressed in Monroe's hand: "Moses Abbott Esqr. Richmond Virga.," second leaf neatly inlaid, seal hole patched, recipient's docket. On crop failures at Monroe's Virginia farm and his mounting debt: "I will pay to your order five hundred dolls...next week, or whenever presented, and the balance at the end of ninety days from that time. I hope that this arrangement will suit you both. My crop in Albemarle & Loudon [counties] has been so miserably deficient, that the proceeds will hardly pay the current expenses of the plantations. Communicate with Mr. Dabney on the subject & let me hear from you without delay. Seal your letter, & write on the back "private" & then put it under another envelope..."
