MONS PIETATIS -- Pro Monte Pietati consilia, sive Quaestiones super mutuo Iudaico et civili et divino . [Venice: Johannis Tacuinus de Tridino, between 1494 and 7 April 1498]. Chancery 4° (192 x 140mm). Collation: a-e 8 f 6 (a1r title, a1v blank, a2r text, f6v blank). Full contents listed in CIBN. 46 leaves. 39 lines. Type: 3:108R, 4:82R. (Title lightly soiled, some marginal staining.) Modern flexible vellum, with calfskin ties. An important work on moneylending and poor relief, published in aid of the charitable institutions known as montes pietatis which distributed money, food and clothing to the poor. It includes an exchange of texts by the jurists Johannes Baptista Rozelius and Giovanni Campeggi (1448-1511) on the ethics of usury (i.e. lending money at interest), arguing that usury is a mortal sin and that Jewish moneylenders should not be tolerated in Christian communities. The work also contains the text of Innocent VIII's papal bull of May 1492, supporting the montes pietatis , and can be dated to [1494-98] on the basis of typographical evidence.
