Beschreibung:

British Game Birds and Waterfowl.
London: John Nimmo, 1891, Large 4to (320 x 255 mm). Title in red and black, half-title. 60 plates, printed in colors from woodblocks, and finished by hand by and after Benjamin Fawcett Original green cloth, blocked in gilt and blind. Condition : expertly rebacked with the original spine laid down and neat repairs to the inner hinges, spine chipped at head and foot. Provenance : Lynn Abbott Trust. a fine copy of the third edition of a popular work that was first published in 1855. The informative text is accompanied by excellent plates of all the birds that were then considered game, including a number of birds that certainly would not be considered as such by today's sportsmen: golden plover, great bustard, swan, etc. The plates, printed by Benjamin Fawcett one of the two greatest color-printers who worked with wood-blocks, are each printed from two colored blocks and then hand-colored. The gilt block used to decorate the front cover is based on the plate of the common snipe, bound facing p.153. Cf. Anker 345; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990) p.125; Mullens & Swann p.414; cf. Nissen IVB 644; cf. Zimmer p. 442.
