Morris”), as Chairman of the Secret Committee of Congress, to Thomas Mumford (1733-1828), Philadelphia, 26 June 1776. 1 p, folio, 12 ¾ x 7 7/8 in., boldly penned. GUN POWDER FOR JOHN PAUL JONES. Morris acknowledges receipt of Mumford’s recent letter: “We have not time at present to answer your said letter the present being only to request you will deliver or cause to be delivered unto Capt. Jonathan Lawrence of New Haven or to Capt. John Paul Jones or either of them, or their order as much of the Continental Gun Powder now under your care, as they may require not exceeding one ton in the whole for which you’ll please to transmit us a receipt & keep a duplicate for your Voucher...” Addressed “By order of the Secret Committee.” Morris was an original member of the Secret Committee from its inception in September 1775. Comprised of experienced businessmen and tradesmen, the Committee was specifically charged with procurement of weapons, munitions, medicines, and other military supplies. Provenance: Harry J.
