MUSIC]. PAGANINI, NICOL, 1782-1840, Italian composer and violinist . Autograph letter signed TO THE COMPOSER FERDINANDO PAER, Paris, 11 April 1831. 1 page, 4to, 230 x 188mm. ( x in.) , in Italian. THE GREAT VIRTUOSO AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS PARIS TRIUMPH A fine letter, written at the pinnacle of Paganini's conquest of Paris in a series of glittering and enthusiastically received concerts. Paganini extravagantly accepts an invitation from Paer which "has filled him with jubilation": the "honor of playing before Her Majesty the Queen" (Marie Amalia, wife of King Louis Phillipe). The violin virtuoso grandiloquently addresses Paer as "maestro di maestri," and writes that although he cannot express his feelings of gratitude at present, he will call on Paer at 10 o'clock the following day. The critic Boerne attended Paginini's opening concert at the Opra, less than a month before and wrote that it was "a divine, a diabolic enthusiasm...the people have all gone crazy." Later the press turned against Paganini and he left Paris at the end of April. Ferdinando Paer (1771-1839) had been a great favourite of Napoleon but after the restoration of the monarchy and the appearance of younger operatic composers in Paris, like Rossini, he was made director of the private chapel of King Louis Phillipe in 1832.
