Comte de Vogüé Comte de Vogüé is by far the largest land owner in Musigny, holding nearly seventy percent of the total area. Musigny is often described as the merger of lacey finesse and subtle power. De Vogüé ideally represents the synthesis of these two elements. Access to a large number of plots allows careful selection of grapes to produce the form of Musigny. A down period during the late 70's and early 80s was ended by a mammoth 1990 Musigny Vieilles Vignes which should prove to be an immortal wine. It started a string of great success for the property during the'90s. Only vines thirty years or older may yield fruit for the Vieilles Vignes Musigny, as younger vines from this grand cru go into a Chambolle Musigny, premier cru bottling, which is a good buy and often superior to other producers' grand crus. JC Musigny, Vieilles Vignes--Vintage 1990 Côte de Nuits, de Vogüé "This wine demands another 6-7 years of cellaring. Oddly, about three years ago it was giving signs of maturing quickly, but it has now completely shut down. The Bordeaux-like, saturated dense ruby/purple color is followed by a tight-fisted nose and flavors of black fruits, underbrush, minerals, smoke, and new oak. Although extremely concentrated, the wine is broodingly backward, and not fun to drink ... yet. This loaded effort should prove to be one of the longest-lived red Burgundies made in the last twenty years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025."
