Contemporary English speckled calf, blind-tooled on sides, brown morocco lettering piece (some light rubbing, a few splits at ends of joints). Provenance : George Simon? (bookplate with motto "Le Bon Temps Viendra", manuscript title mounted on verso of engraved title). Marciano commemorates the obsequies held for PHILIP IV (1605-1665), King of Spain, at Naples. The book is simultaneously an emblem book, with 60 etched emblems on the theme of the constellations, with small portraits of Habsburg family members. The large folding plates show ephemeral architecture designed by Neapolitan Baroque architect FRANCESCO ANTONIO PICCHIATTI and the text describes the interior decoration of the church by LUCA GIORDANO The prints of emblems on this scale constitute a highly unusual feature in a fête book. Philip IV's relations and lineage serve as the basis for his praises, and each emblem is devoted to a single Habsburg compared to a figure in a constellation. EXCEEDINGLY RARE.
