Narrative of a Pedestrian Journey through Russia and Siberian Tartary, from the Frontiers of China to the Frozen Sea and Kamtchatka; performed during the years 1820, 1821, 1822, and 1823 Author: Cochrane, John Dundas Place: London Publisher: John Murray Date: 1824 Description: xiv, 564 pp. Illustrated with two large folding maps of Siberia. 21x13.1 cm (8¼x5¼"), rebound in maroon calf, morocco spine label, lettering in gilt, raised bands; edges marbled, new endpapers. First Edition. Narrative from Scottish naval officer famous for traveling on foot (nicknamed the "Pedestrian Traveler"). Cochrane notes that he rode as well as walked, but this journey was novel because of how much land he was able to traverse on foot. It covers his journeys across Russia & Siberia via Irkutsk, Yakutsk & Nizneokolymusk. There he met Baron Wrangell who was starting his Kolmya River Expedition. Before sailing from Kamchatka he wed a local woman who accompanied him back to London. Bookplate of previous owner on old endpapers, missing half-title. Lot Amendments Condition: Front hinge tender, occasional marginal foxing throughout, some creasing and foxing to maps, both have small stub tears, no loss; very good. Item number: 312171
