(Voyage & Exploration) - Ens. 2 ouvr. - BELZONI, Giovanni Battista - Narrative of the recent discoveries within the pyramids, temples, tombs and excavations, in Egypt and Nubia; and of a journey to the coast of the Red Sea, in search of the ancient Berenice; and another to the oasis of Jupiter Ammon. BRUSSELS, H. RÉMY, 1835. In-8° (text n.c., incomplete of the coloured frontispiece, handwritten note, stamp and two small holes in the title-page, rare and scattered foxing). Modern binding : half blond calf, marbled paper boards, flat spine with green and red morocco labels, wrappers preserved (flyleaves renewed, corners and spine of the wrappers repaired, handwritten note, foxing and small stains on the upper one).
On the recommendation of the orientalist Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, Belzoni (1778-1823) was sent by the consul Henry Salt to the Ramasseum where he found the colossal bust of Ramses II. He cleared of sand the entrance of the great temple at Abu Simbel, discovered the tomb of Seti I and was the first to penetrate in the second pyramid of Giza. Work (1st ed. : 1820) including contributions from his wife Sarah of which the "Account of the women of Egypt, Nubia, and Syria", a personal view of native life in Egypt and Palestine. Copy with 1 note and 2 letters in French (Brussels, 1835) confirming that Sarah Belzoni partly wrote this work printed for her by Rémy and mentionning that Le Roux, bookseller, left 3 copies (incl. ours) at the "bureaux de la régence, à l'hôtel de ville", i.e. the "dépôt littéraire" ? (cfr handwritten mention on the title-page and stamp "Propriété littéraire, Article de la loi de 1817"). # Blackmer 402 (1st ed.).
