NAUDÉ, Gabriel (1600-53). Instructions Concerning Erecting of a Library: Presented to My Lord The President De Mesme . Translated by John Evelyn (1620-1706). London: printed for G. Bedle, T. Collins, and J. Crook, 1661. 8 o (161 x 99 mm). Roman and italic types. Typographical ornament, woodcut initial. (Some dozen headlines cut into.) Contemporary English sprinkled and panelled calf, gilt roll along board-edges, red-sprinkled leaf-edges. Provenance : H. Rawdon (contemporary signature on title) -- John Rawdon (signed on title and p. 9), probably the 4th baronet and first earl of Moira (1720-93) or his father, the 3rd baronet -- Selina Frances Granard, née Rawdon (armorial bookplate, signature), daughter of the first earl of Moira, 1753-1827, who married in 1799 George Forbes, 5th earl of Granard. FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of Naudé's treatise, which became through John Evelyn's version almost as influential in England as in France. An errata leaf was inserted in a later issue, because the translator was much exercised by the misprints; as he told his fellow diarist, Samuel Pepys, Evelyn even tried to suppress the edition, which may account for the book's rarity today. Evelyn made the translation from the second French edition, which was appended to Louis Jacob's Traicté des plus belles bibliothèques du monde , published in 1644, the year of his stay in Paris. His dedication to Lord Clarendon, Chancellor to Charles II, discusses at length the importance of the creation of the Royal Society, whose Charter of Incorporation would pass the Great Seal the following year. Keynes 30; Wing N-247.
