Nelson, Frances HerbertManuscript document, being a release of land in Nevis by the Dowager Lady Nelson to Jonathan Nesbitt, 22 July 1818 Single sheet of vellum (575 x 705 mm). Accomplished in ink in a clerical hand, multiple rules in red ink, denoting royal or aristocratic ties, signed at bottom ("Frances Herbert Nelson & Bronte"), witnessed and docketed on verso, bearing the signature of John Lyons Henry James Elizabeth Loscombe, and Frances Evans; old fold, some spotting and staining, fading in areas, two smaller holes at fold, one larger hole at lower right costing a few words. Born and baptized on the Caribbean island of Nevis in 1758, Frances Herbert Woolward was ushered into the colonial elite form the earliest moments of her life. In June of 1779, Frances married her first husband, Dr. Josiah Nisbet, an affluent physician, who moved in Nevis's political circles. The Nisbets, along with their infant son, settled in England in 1781. Shortly after arriving, however, Josiah was taken ill, and died. Frances ultimately returned to Nevis to live with her uncle, John Richardson Herbert. He served as President of the Council of Nevis, and a regular guests to his house was a young naval captain stationed off the island, Horatio Nelson. The present release of land also constitutes a receipt in the amount of £1,000 for Dowager Lady Nelson.
