NELSON, HORATIO, Admiral . Document signed ("Nelson") with autograph postscript, Palermo, 4 October 1799. 1 page, folio, 305 x 210 mm (12 x 86 in.), integral blank, trifling repairs to margins and central fold, verso with ENDORSEMENT AND SIGNATURE OF SIR WILLIAM HAMILTON SIR WILLIAM HAMILTON AND NELSON A document written at the point when Nelson's secret affair with Emma Hamilton began to be suspected by Nelson's circle, partly due to his reluctance to leave Naples, in defiance of orders. The endorsement by Sir William, Emma's husband, adds an ironic twist. Addressed to "the Captains and Commanders of all His Majesty's Ships which may touch at Palermo except the Squadron at present off Malta," the order reads: "You are duly required and directed on your arrival at this port forthwith to proceed with the ship you Command and join me without delay at Mahon not finding one there you will immediately apply to the commanding sea Officer at that port for the rendevous where I may be. Given on board the Foudroyant." The postscript, in Nelson's hand, reads: "All dispatches & letters for me are to be delivered to His Excellency the Rt. Honbl. Sir William Hamilton for his perusal. N." Endorsed on verso by Hamilton: "Left with me at Palermo when His Lordship went to Mahon to endeavour to procure from Genl. Fox some British Troops to garrison the citadel of Messina." Three months earlier, Nelson had been ordered to join Lord Keith's flotilla at Port Mahon. However, blatantly disobeying orders, he remained at Naples, except for a brief, two-week excursion to Mahon, after which he quickly returned to Naples and his mistress.
