NELSON, Horatio, Viscount Nelson (1758-1805). Autograph letter signed ('Nelson & Bronte') to Rear Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane [commander-in-chief at the Leeward Islands], Victory , 29 May 1805, 'Should the Enemy's combined Squadron have called at Martinico and taken the Squadron which came from Rochford with them their force will be 24 Sail of the Line, it will therefore be necessary for me to take the whole of your Squadron with me and then I shall only be 16 Sail of the Line; If any Island within your Command be their Object of Attack of course you will proceed with the fleet', but should they aim for Jamaica Cochrane will have the choice of either pursuing or shifting his flag to a frigate so that Nelson may have the advantage of his ships of the line, 3 pages, 4to , dockets. The pursuit of Villeneuve to the Caribbean in the months before Trafalgar: Nelson had left the Portuguese coast on 11 May in pursuit of the French fleet, which reached Martinique 3 days later.
