Read more Nevill Johnson Lot 171 - 'Sanctuary (1986)' Estimate: €1,200 - €1,800 Rightly renowned for his photographs of Dublin in the 1950's, Nevill Johnson was also an artistically restless, exceptionally capable painter with a sound grasp of Cubism. He enjoyed a late flowering from the latter 1970s. This is a superb example of that late work: a cluster of architectonic forms enfolds an ambiguously figurative central presence. The palette is spare and beautifully judged, just as in a closely related work of the time, GAEA. As Dickon Hall noted in his book on Johnson, even as his work became increasingly abstract, it gained in emotional weight.
