Beschreibung:

Large pipe, medium to dark brown in color, wood very handsomely grained, possibly burl. Max. width approx. 3.5 inches; max. bowl height approx. 3 inches; bowl dia. 2 inches. Front carved with large relief silhouette figure of a standing soldier, hand on hip, holding a military musket upright in other hand. Incised carved in large semi-circular motif completely surrounding the standing figure, (upper/lower case) 185. Regiments. N.Y. State. Vol. U.S.A. The 185th New York State Volunteers, also known as the 6th Onondaga County Regiment, was organized in Syracuse and mustered into service on September 9, 1864. Soldiers were enlisted for one-year under the command of Col. Edwin S. Jenney. Upon leaving the state on September 27, 1864, the troops immediately proceeded to the front serving in the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Corps, and participated in engagements including Burgess Farm, Hicksford Raid, Gravelly Run, Five Forks, and finally at Appomattox Court House on the day of Lee's surrender. The regiment mustered out on May 30, 1865, in Washington, D.C. Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co. Condition: Few slight surface abrasions. Despite age and use, the pipe is in very good condition. Inventory number inked on rim of shank.
