Beschreibung:

NEWCASTLE, William Cavendish, Duke of (1592-1676). A General System of Horsemanship . London: J. Brindley, 1743. 2 volumes in one, 2° (440 x 280mm). Half-title, double-page engraved title in French (with the imprint of Jacques van Meurs, Antwerp: 1658), 42 double-page engraved plates, on guards, 20 anatomical plates of horses (12 printed in sepia, 2 of these double-page), 8 engraved vignettes (one in sepia), and 6 engraved historiated initials (one in sepia), woodcut text diagrams. (A very few marginal spots.) Contemporary mottled calf, panelled in gilt, spine gilt with red morocco label (old repairs at joints, and extremities, front joint starting). Provenance : 'J.C.L' (?18th-century bookplate) -- early 19th-century manuscript biographical note on Cavendish on front blank -- Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944, bookplate; his sale, Sotheby's 12 July 1937, lot 100). THE LOWTHER COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, re-using the copperplates from the original French edition published at Antwerp in 1658. The Duke of Newcastle's equestrian skill was famous throughout Europe. Ben Jonson celebrated this skill in The Underwood (epigram LIII), and his riding school at Antwerp attracted students from all over the continent. His comprehensive book on horses and horsemanship, lavishly illustrated with engravings by Clouet, de Jode and Vorsterman after Van Diepenbeck, cost in excess of £1300, a fabulous sum at the time. Part II comprises the first edition in English of Jean and Gaspard de Saunier's Parfaite connoissance des Chevaux . Mennessier de la Lance II, p.250; Mellon/Podeschi 49; Nissen ZBI 849.
