(Slightly foxed, plate 2 of vol. 3 cropped touching image.) Half red roan, pebble cloth sides (slight wear, remnants of paper labels on covers of vol. 2, some inner hinges split). Motte's was the first complete English translation of the Principia . His text, first published in 1729, was accompanied by a translation of Newton's "System of the world", which had originally been intended as the third book of the Principia , and by the astronomer John Machin's unsuccessful attempt to rectify Newton's lunar thoery. In 1803 these texts were re-edited by the mathematician and bookseller William Davis who added to them William Emerson's commentary on the Principia .
