NEWTON, Sir Isaac (1642-1727). The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy . Translated from Latin into English by Andrew Motte (d. 1730). - System of the World . - William EMERSON (1701-1782). A Short Comment on, and Defence of, the Principia . - John MACHIN (d. 1751). The Laws of the Moon's Motion according to Gravity . A new edition, carefully revised and corrected by William Davis (1771-1807). London: Printed for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, Davis and Dickson, 1819. 3 volumes, 209 x 129 mm. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Newton by E. Scriven after I. Allen. 25, 19, 10 folding plates; 2 folding letterpress tables in vol. 2; woodcut text diagrams. (Slightly foxed, plate 2 of vol. 3 cropped touching image.) Half red roan, pebble cloth sides (slight wear, remnants of paper labels on covers of vol. 2, some inner hinges split). Motte's was the first complete English translation of the Principia . His text, first published in 1729, was accompanied by a translation of Newton's "System of the world", which had originally been intended as the third book of the Principia , and by the astronomer John Machin's unsuccessful attempt to rectify Newton's lunar thoery. In 1803 these texts were re-edited by the mathematician and bookseller William Davis who added to them William Emerson's commentary on the Principia . (Faint dampstain to lower corner of frontispiece, vol. 1 title, and endleaves.) Contemporary half sheep, marbled sides (slight wear). Provenance : F.H.H. (bookplate).
