Beschreibung:

NEWTON, SIR ISAAC Philosophiæ naturalis principia mathematica. Editio tertia aucta & emendata . London: Apud Guil. & Joh. Innys, 1726. The stated third edition, this one of the 200 large-paper copies on "General Royal Paper" with the "CC" watermark. Full diced calf of the period, marbled endpapers, 11 1/8 x 9 inches (29 x 22.5 cm); [38], 530, [6] pp. [4] pp. blank; with the half-title, the engraved frontispiece portrait, dedication leaf, Halley's verses but not the privilege leaf or the ad leaf found in some copies; numerous woodcut diagrams and the engraving on p. 506. The leather of the binding dry, and the front board reattached but loosening again, the leather spine creased and vertically cracked, spine ends chipped. Within, a few minor spots and stains, but overall this is a fresh, crisp copy. With the armorial bookplate of Spains Hall, Finchingfield, Essex on the front pastedown, and the stencilled name of S.R. Ruggles, Clare Hall on the front flyleaf. This edition was the last published during the author's lifetime and is the basis for all subsequent editions. The editor was Henry Pemberton, M.D., F.R.S., and this rescension of the text contains a new preface by Newton and a large number of alterations. The most important of these is in the scholium on fluxions, in which Leibnitz had been mentioned by name in the earlier editions. His name is absent here, leading to claims that Newton was avoiding sharing credit for the development of calculus with his Continental rival. Printing and the Mind of Man 161; (describing the first edition); Babson 13; Gray 9; Wallis 9; HBS 64483. C
