Motte, 2 folding letterpress tables, 47 folding engraved plates, 3 engraved head-pieces by Motte. (Some minor soiling, a few pale stains.) Contemporary calf gilt, partially unopened (front cover of volume one nearly detached, other joints starting, lettering pieces renewed, scuffed at the extremities); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : Leonard Parkinson (signature volume two); John A. Clarke (presentation inscription from Parkinson title-page volume two); Hardwicke Knight (bookplates); Franklin Institute Library, The James T. Morris Memorial Fund (bookplates and library stamps, dispersed 1985). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THE PRINCIPIA . The first edition was published in Latin in 1687 (see lot 265). Motte's translation is followed by a translation of Newton's "System of the World" (volume two from page 200).
