[ With :] 3 related photographs (2 of Nicoll, 1 of Lilian Bayliss with a friendly inscription by Bayliss to Professor and Mrs Nicoll, dated 1934). allardyce nicoll’s working copy of the first edition of chapman’s masterly translation of homer’s “iliad”: an important association copy. The Princeton University Press published an influential and much admired edition of Chapman’s translation of Homer in 1956: it was edited, with introductions, textual notes, commentaries, and glossaries, by John Ramsay Allardyce Nicoll (1894-1976). He was born in Scotland, taught English literature in both England and Amereica, and wrote on English drama and literature. The present work includes extensive manuscript pencilled annotations, corrections and occasional notes on 174pp (G4v - H5v and R2v-Gg6v). The corrections are chiefly to original over-enthusiatic punctuation, but there are also occasional difficult words made easier. Overall, this copy offers some valuable insights into the working methods of one of the great 20th-century authorities on English poetry, drama and literature.
