Dimensions vary. Contemporaneous notations on reverse of five photographs seemingly in the hand of Jeanette Lucia Hannah, Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star at the Prince Hall Masonic and O.E.S. Home. Depicted are Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rev. Ralph Abernathy, and Mrs. Jeanette Lucia Hannah, Matron of the Prince Hall Masonic & Order of the Eastern Star Home in Rock Island, IL. In 1965 there was a catastrophic flood of the Mississippi River from which The Prince Hall masons, an African-American masonic lodge, sheltered evacuees. In addition to the photograph of Matron Hannah presenting Dr. King with a card from the Prince Hall Masonic Home, there is a photograph of Connie Strand speaking with Dr. King. Other photographs include portraits of Jeanette Lucia Hannah and (presumably) of her mother Mrs. Garfnet Lucia McGruder (1895-1955). Two other photographs document the April 8, 1968 March on Memphis, four days after the assassination of Dr. King. Depicted is Phil Hannah of Rock Island with other college classmates from Western Illinois University attending the march. Prince Hall Freemasonry is a branch of North American Freemasonry for African Americans founded by Prince Hall on September 29, 1784. There are two main branches of Prince Hall Freemasonry: the independent State Prince Hall Grand Lodges, most of which are recognized by Regular Masonic jurisdictions, and those under the jurisdiction of the National Grand Lodge. Prince Hall Freemasonry is the oldest and largest (300,000+ initiated members) predominantly African-American fraternity in the nation.
