Lord Northwick (1770-1859) was one of the greatest collectors of the first half of the nineteenth century and Capt. George Spencer Churchill (1876-1964) fulfilled a similar role in the 20th century. Lord Northwick acquired so many paintings he had to buy a second mansion, Thirlestane House, Cheltenham to display them. When he died intestate in 1859 the contents were sold over 22 days. His nephew and heir bought some of the pictures and these and the estate of Northwick Park, Glos. were eventually inherited by the 3rd Baron's step-grandson Capt. George Spencer Churchill in 1912. The latter greatly expanded the collection and this was then itself dispersed in one of the outstanding post-war sales, realising over £2,000,000 in 1965.
