Nur ad-Din Abd'ul Rahman Jami, Yusuf wa Zulaikha, in Farsi, illuminated manuscript on polished paper [Northern India (Kashmir), 1800-1820 AD] complete, 211 leaves (plus 3 flyleaves), double column, 10 lines black nasta'liq per page, opening 2 leaves of text within large gilt and polychrome borders, 26 large miniatures in the text, all in bright and bold colours, typical of the Kashmir region, blue and gold decorative banners separating the chapters throughout, catch-words, leaves ruled in blue and gold, remains of contemporary cloth markers to the margins highlighting the leaves containing miniatures, some smudges and scuffs, affecting text in places, pastedowns hand-coloured in blue and grey, in the style of decorative Islamic tiles from the region, overall very good condition, 128 by 80 mm.; housed in contemporary burgundy morocco, ruled in blind, 3 detailed cartouches stamped on each of the covers, decorated and coloured in gilt, rebacked and edges repaired and coloured in green, excellent condition A charming example of Jami's romantic love story, from his epic the Haft Awrang (The Seven Thrones), the medieval Islamic version of the story of Joseph and the Prophet's Wife. Here beautifully illustrated with 26 illustrations in the text, with the colouring and technique from the distinctive Kashmir regions of early nineteenth-century Northern India in the early 1800s.
