Custance spent her childhood at Weston Old Hall, the family seat in Weston Longville, Norfolk. She instigated a courtship with Lord Douglas by writing to him in June 1901, six months after the death of Oscar Wilde. Lord Alfred Douglas (1870-1945) also known as Bosie Douglas, was an English poet and a lover of Oscar Wilde. Oliver Hilary Sambourne Messel (1904-1978) was an English artist and one of the foremost stage, costume, interior and architectural designers of the twentieth century.
