Odobenus rosmarus Cold Artic Seas of the Northern Hemisphere Walruses are pinnipeds and are related to seals, sea lions and walruses. Living in cold waters, they have developed a layer of blubber that measures as much as four inches in thickness. Their skin is as thick as two inches; in males it is the thickest around the neck and shoulders where it protects the walrus from the jabs of the tusks of competitive walruses. Walruses have two natural enemies, the orca and the polar bear. Though not generally considered graceful creatures on land, walruses can outrun humans.
