This bottle represents one of the original lines of whiskey introduced by the Van Winkle family after they had to sell their stake in the Stitzel-Weller distillery. Under the sale agreement, they were still able to buy whiskey from their former facility, which Julian Van Winkle II and then his son, Julian Van Winkle III, bottled under the Old Rip Van Winkle brand, one which their patriarch, Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle, had originated in the 1930s. The squat bottle, also known as a barrel bottle, would remain in use until 2013, when it switched to the cognac-style used by the rest of the line
