Title: On the Border with Mackenzie or Winning West Texas from the Comanches Author: Carter, R[obert] G. Place: Washington Publisher: Eynon Printing Co. Date: [1935] Description: [2], xviii, 542 pp. Illustrated with 3 plates. 9x6, original red cloth lettered in gilt. First Edition. Carter was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for fighting Comanches on the upper Brazos River on October 10, 1871, during which action his left leg was shattered. He was forced into early retirement, and though he later recovered full use of the leg, he was not allowed to return to active duty. The present work, published when he was ninety, is the best known of his six booklets and three hardcover books he produced relating to his experiences on the frontier, and is considered the standard source on the military actions in west Texas during the period. Accompanied by House Ex. Doc. No. 175, 44th Congress, 1st Session, "Letter of Colonel Mackenzie Relative to Matters at Fort Sill," 1876, 4 pp., extracted. Howes C195; Jenkins 25; Rader 611. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine very slightly faded, faint bumps to spine ends; else near fine to fine, rarely found better. Item number: 161972
