ONE OWNER AND 31,500 MILES FROM NEW 1973 2.7 LITRE PORSCHE 911RS CARRERA LIGHTWEIGHT Chassis No. 9113601406 Engine No. 6631376 Blue with red and black interior Engine: flat six cylinder, 2,687cc, 210bhp at 6,300rpm; Gearbox: five speed manual; Suspension: front, independent MacPherson telescopic damper struts, lower wishbones, longitudinal torsion bars; rear, independent, trailing radius arms, transverse torsion bars, telescopic dampers. Brakes: ventilated discs all round. Left hand drive. The classic 2.7 Carrera RS was created in 1972 and was developed from the 911S series as the basis of Porsche's assault on the international 3-litre classes. It is one of the most famous Porsche road cars ever built and is now regarded as one of the top five sports cars to emerge from the 1970s. Its versatility is hardly surprising as the 911 series was designed from the start to be equally suitable for competition and series production. The RS is highly usable, content both trickling through traffic and competing on the race track. It is a formidable race car. The 2.7 litre fuel injected six-cylinder air-cooled engine was the largest used on a road-going Porsche at the time, capable of 158mph, accelerating from standstill to 60mph in just over five seconds. Combined with an excellent gear change, powerful yet responsive brakes and precise handling, the Carrera RS was more than a match for any Ferrari Dino! Only 1,580 RS Carreras were built out of which 200 were made with spartan, weight saving M471 specification and designated Lightweight. The Lightweight version of the RS series, or Rennsport to give its full name, not only had a fabulous engine, but employed drastic weight saving exercises and had better wheels and tires. Mechanical improvements included an uprated engine with 210hp and a much improved torque curve, gas-filled Bilstein shock absorbers, reinforced rear suspension cross member and trailing arms. The car was lightened by using thinner sheet steel for the body and fiber glass on the front and rear bumpers, rear lid and other unstressed parts. Thin glass was used for the windows. This genuine RS Lightweight has a tremendous provenance. It was one of very few cars that was delivered new in 1973 to the USA and was delivered to Holbert's Porsche Audi, Inc. dealership in Warrington, PA. The Holbert family is of course particularly famous for their racing exploits in the Porsche marque. It was purchased new in March 1974 by the current owner who has maintained this vehicle to the very highest degree. The mileage from new reads 31,540. Factory records indicate that this car was built in May 1973 and originally was white with red Carrera lettering and came with a heated rear window, head rests and lap belts. It would also appear this car had some 'touring' refinements added such as a glove box, clock and radio. At the time of purchase the owner had the car repainted blue by Holbert, which cost a further $500 making the original invoice price $15,500. Nine months after purchase, the underside of the car was rust-proofed and in 1975 the owner special ordered Recaro seats from Germany. In 1977 the well-known upholsterer, Leif Drexler, installed new carpets. A full service history accompanies the Porsche and indicates that the owner was fastidious in his care of this vehicle. The Porsche has been garaged throughout its life and never scratched or dented. Road testers and RS owners are unanimous in their praise of 'the ultimate driver's machine', this example must rank as one of the best money can buy.
