When Ford introduced the Mustang in April of 1964, it set the car world alight. Starting with a basic Ford Falcon, a sleek and sporting two-door hardtop coupe or convertible body was offered and a 289ci V8 sat under the hood. Evoking the pricey sports cars from Europe, but at a much more reasonable price, the Mustang, which took its name from the now famous WWII-era P51 Mustang fighter plane, was an instant success that created a whole new automotive category—the Pony Car. Chrysler and Chevy quickly followed suit with the Plymouth Barracuda and Chevrolet Camaro, touching off he Muscle Car wars that would dominate the American car market and the posters on the walls of teenagers across the US for the rest of the 1960s and early 1970s. The example presented here is offered by its original owner. Ordered from Pace Ford at Kings Highway and Utica Avenue in Brooklyn, NY in September 1965 at a price of $2807, the vendor brought home his 'Stang, his first car, on December 12, 1965. Under the hood was the optional 289ci V8 mated to a three-speed manual transmission. The exterior color, Signal Flare Red, is especially unique and was only offered on the Mustang, and only for one year. The box for the optional vinyl roof was also ticked. Only a few weeks after purchasing the car, it became an invaluable tool for the owner and his friends during the 1966 New York City Transit strike in January—each day he and five others would pile into the car and make their way into and then out of Manhattan for the duration of the 12 day strike. The reliable Ford would go on to serve as his primary car for the next 27 years. Driven only sparingly and carefully maintained, the mileage on the car is said to be original (with the odometer having turned once) at just under 126,350 miles. Restored eight years ago at a cost of almost ten times the original purchase price, the cars has only been driven about 125 miles a year since completion of the restoration. Now ready to move on to only its second owner, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a single owner from new car with local New York history and a special color not likely to be seen at the next Mustang meet!
