West portal of Regensburg Cathedral. 1858/59. Large-format albumen print. 32,5 x 42 cm. Mounted to original card (some foxing, soiled and edge wear), photographer's blindstamp in lower right corner on mount. Oppenheim was one of the first German photographers who worked with the calotype process. He learned the process with Gustave Le Gray and already used it in 1852 while in Spain. One year later he photographed the Acropolis and circa 1858/59 he worked in Regensburg where he made a series of the cathedral and the St. Jakob church.
