Title: Original Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, 1804-1806. Printed from the Original Manuscripts in the Library of the American Philosophical Society and by Direction of its committee on Historical Documents. Together with Manuscript material of Lewis and Clark from other Sources including Notebooks, Letters, Maps, etc. and the Journals of Charles Floyd and Joseph Whitehouse. Author: Thwaites, Reuben Gold, editor Place: New York Publisher: Dodd Mead & Company Date: 1904-05 Description: 8 volumes in 15, including atlas volume. Illustrated with facsimile plates, maps, plans, views, and portraits, many after Karl Bodmer Many of the plates in both a hand-colored and uncolored state. (4to) 12¼9, original white and tan cloth, pictorial label on front covers. Number 29 of 50 copies on Imperial Japan Vellum. The first publication of the original journals of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Thwaite's historically sound treatment of the journals and supplementary material, and the important illustrations, make this one of the most important, and most impressive, publications relating to Lewis and Clark. It was issued in three different formats: A deluxe limited folio edition of 50 copies printed on imperial Japan paper with many illustrations colored by hand (this one), a limited folio edition of 200 copies printed on Van Gelder hand-made paper, and an octavo trade edition. The quality of the printing on thick vellum paper, the array of excellent facsimiles of documents and maps, the fine gravure reproductions of drawings and engravings by Bodmer and others, and the stunning impact of the exquisite hand-colored plates of Indians from Bodmer originals, make this far and away the most desirable, and elusive, of the editions. Howes L320. Lot Amendments Condition: Spines faded, some soiling to cloth, spine ends frayed, one volume with repair to foot of spine, edges and corners worn, evidence of bookplate removal on front pastedowns; a few signatures slightly pulled; else very good. Item number: 194024
