Title: Original Pen-&-Ink drawing of the sailing ship John Williams owned by the London Missionary Society Author: D., A.J. Place: No place Publisher: Date: Sept. 1872 Description: Pen-&-Ink on paper, with two flags hand-colored. 11x18 cm (4½x7"). The missionary ship John Williams named after John Williams (1796–1839), a missionary who had been active in the South Pacific, and was killed and eaten by cannibals. There seem to have been a total of seven ships operated by the London Missionary Sociey bearing the name John Williams the first of which was commissioned in 1844. The name of the ship is on a pennant flyling from the tallest mast, and a Union Jack at rear bearst the motto Mission of Pease. Initialed A.J. D. and dated Sept. 1872 at lower right. Rubberstamp on verso, "Webster Collection," with ink date 1975 at center. Lot Amendments Condition: A bit of soiling, very good. Item number: 233769
