Notable French aviation pioneer Hubert Latham gained fame for numerous exploits, not least that he made the first to attempt to fly across the English Channel, and unfortunately was first to (unintentionally) land an aeroplane on water. He had also set world records for altitude and speed. Latham participated in a number of competitions throughout Europe and, in late 1910 and early 1911, crossed the Atlantic to compete in four in the United States: New York, site of the second Gordon Bennett International Gold Cup race, where Latham was a member of the French team (it was the first flight in a competition of the Antoinette VII equipped with a V-16 100 hp motor); Baltimore, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
