Engraved allegorical general title and 100 double-page maps, hand-coloured throughout including initials, with a plain engraved plate 'Carta del Viage de los Israelites' captioned 'Joseph Andrade sculp. Mtt. a 1747' bound in at end. (Lacking A4, i.e. the last leaf of contents with the portrait of Ortelius, title with tear along plate mark but without loss, a few short marginal tears and nicks with one into imprint and another repaired, title with small patches of adhesion from front free endpaper, map 15 of Spain strengthened along left-hand margin and with a few short marginal tears to other sides, light even browning throughout.) 18th-century Spanish mottled sheep, gilt spine with raised bands in 7 compartments, gilt lettering-piece in second, French hand-coloured decorative endpapers captioned 'A Paris chez Les Associes No 119', red edges (rubbed, lower cover more heavily, endpapers chipped and frayed and with some minor worming). Provenance : Juan (semi-erased 18th-century ink ownership inscription on dedication) -- manuscript index bound in dated 14 August 1757, with corresponding annotations on verso of title, on dedication, verso of last leaf, and in a few other places in a neat hand -- 18th-century folding typographic advertisement by Nicolas Villargordo, Salamanca bookseller, for a topographical work relating to Portugal, bound in after contents -- Ambrosio Gonzalez (document dated 19 April 1858 conferring a military command loosely inserted). THE FIRST SPANISH EDITION, AND THE FIRST PUBLISHED BY PLANTIN, WITH SPLENDID HAND-COLOURING . It contains revised maps of the World and the Americas, although the Nomenclature and Parergon are omitted from this edition.
