Oscar Björck (b. Stockholm 1860, d. s.p. 1929) The artist's self-portrait. Unsigned. Oil on cardboard. 31×23 cm. As early as 1882, the year after completing his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, Björck traveled to Skagen to join the artists' colony, which practised the new French plein air painting and everyday realism. He was a central artist among the Skagen painters and became an important communicator of the modern breakthrough in art in Sweden. In Skagen, he painted some of his most important pictures, e.g. “Et Nødskud” (An Emergency Shot) dated 1883 (National Gallery of Denmark Inv. No. KMS1236).
