Beschreibung:

TROLLOPE, ANTHONY. 1815-1882. The Fixed Period. London: William Blackwood & Sons, 1882. 2 volumes. 8vo. Publisher's red cloth, spines fading, minor wear to extremities. WITH: Autograph Letter Signed ("Anthony Trollope") to "My Dear Miss [Mary] Holmes," ragrding a manuscript, 4 pp, 8vo, April 14, 1871, old folds, tears at edges. Provenance: W.H. Smith and Sons subscription library; Charles G. Roland (Osler bibliographer, receipt with typed note from Nicolas Dewey, Jenner Old & Rare Medical Books); James Tait Goodrich (bookplate). FIRST EDITION OF THE FIXED PERIOD, which Osler referenced in his February 22, 1905, farewell address at Johns Hopkins. Billed as "Osler Day," the festivities took a turn for the strange when Osler made humorous reference to this novel, noting (mistakenly) "the plot hinges upon the admirable scheme of a college into which men at sixty retired for a year of contemplation before a peaceful departure by chloroform. Whether Anthony Trollope's suggestion of a college and chloroform should be carried out or not I have become a little dubious, as my own time is getting so short." The press was aghast, exclaiming in one example, "Osler recommends chloroform at sixty." The incident gave rise to numerous jokes and songs, and "Oslercize" entered the lexicon as a synonym for "euthanize." (See lot xx for a verse example).
