.40 caliber, both 36" octagonal barrels stamped on top J. Harder Lock Haven, PA. Engraved lockplate and hammer with double set triggers and brass trigger guard. Top of wrist with metal inlay with geometric etchings. Buttstock with brass patchbox and turkey on opposite sides of molded wood. Brass buttplate as well as brass eagle with etched AWW attached to the wrist. Double side-by-side wood ramrods. Jacob Harder (d.1855?) had apprenticed to Bartlett Brothers in Binghamton, NY prior to 1838; after 1838 he relocated to Athens, Bradford County; and after 1840 he relocated to Lock Haven, Clinton, County, PA. At one point he had eight employees working for him. (See Whisker, 1990; Kauffman, 1960: 101.) Condition: Pleasant brown finish with some scratches. Breech area of the gun somewhat loose. Sliver of wood missing at top of lockplate.
