Under the heading “Shreveport, May 23” this short news item reports that Grant had been defeated, presumably referring to the Battle of the Wilderness (5-7 May 1864): “…No fighting since the 12th inst. Federal loss 35,000 admitted by Federal papers … Grant made a speech to his army, stating that he did not fall back because he was whipped, but because he did not have force enough to capture Richmond … and Richmond would be his by the 1st of June.” The extra also has mention of Confederate General Richard Taylor’s capture of four transports and two gunboats in the Red River Campaign and that in Arkanasas, Confederate cavalry General Joseph O. Shelby had “killed, wounded and captured many men, mostly negroes.
