Architectural woodcut title-border, Giolito's phoenix device contained in border, woodcut world map and 94 woodcut illustrations (7 repetitions), ornamental side-pieces and woodcut initials, printer's woodcut device at end. (First gathering loose.) Contemporary Venetian chestnut morocco gilt, with owner's initials "C.G.G.C." on the covers, within blind- and gilt- fillets and floral corner-pieces, gilt and gauffered edges. Provenance : Alberto Pellana (owner's signature on front flyleaf); Duke of Roxburghe (ink note on front free endpaper); Heber (his name in pencil on front free endpaper); Payne and Foss (Catalogue 1840, pencil note); Ashburnham Library (shelfmark, his sale Sotheby's, July 1897, lot 1408); acquired from Sotheby's London, 1960. Second Giolito edition "di nvovo ristampate" of the complete Dolce translation of the Metamorphoses in ottava rima. Most of the blocks are printed with ornamental side pieces, four new blocks are added, some of the repetitions are omitted and only one of the bible blocks is used. The woodcut world map includes America labeled "Nueva Hispania." Adams O-508; Brunet II:789. Mortimer Italian 342; Shirley 95.
