Bengal N.I.), an official replacement of Indian Mutiny period, named in engraved running script; Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (Bge. Major C. St. G. Brownlow, Kumaon & Rohd. Bde.), together with a miniature portrait in oil on ivory, the whole contained in an old glazed frame, nearly very fine or better (3) £700-900 Footnote Charles St. George Brownlow was born in St. Pancras, London, in July 1834, the son of the Rev. John Bligh Brownlow, younger brother of the 1st Baron Lurgan. Appointed an Ensign in the 15th Native Infantry in September 1840, he was advanced to Lieutenant in September 1843, and was present at the crossing of the Chenab, and at the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat (Medal & 2 clasps) Having then been advanced to Captain in November 1854, Brownlow was serving as Brigade Major at Bareilly, Rohilkhand, on the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny in May 1857 - his own house being torched in the small hours on the 31st, most probably the occasion he lost his original Punjab Medal. Be that as it may, he was quickly enrolled in the Kumaon and Rohilkhand Brigade, was advanced to Major in March 1858, and assisted in putting down the mutiny in that region (Medal). Brownlow finally retired in the rank of Colonel and died in Brighton, Sussex, in April 1879.
