Pair of George III Inlaid Amboyna, Kingwood and Polychrome-Decorated Games Tables Circa 1780 Each hinged demi-lune top with scrolling floral border of poppies and opening to a baize-lined surface, the frieze centered by a panel with a displayed eagle, the tapering square legs headed by flower-decorated panels and ending in spade feet. Height 29 1/2 inches (74.9 cm), width 36 3/4 inches (93.4 cm), depth 17 3/4 inches (45.1 cm). Provenance: Mallett at Bourdon House, London. The highly figured amboyna tops have painted borders of scrolling poppies. Thomas Sheraton, in his Accompaniment to the Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing-Book, 1793, pl. 3 illustrates 'a variety of ornaments useful for learners to copy from, but particularly adapted to the cabinet and chair branches.' Included are instructions for 'japanning' or painting and designs for 'Borders for Pier Tables', pl. 3, similar to those of the present tables.
