PALLADIO, Andrea (1518-1580). Architecture ... in Four Books ... Revis'd, Design'd, and Publish'd by Giacomo Leoni ... the third edition, corrected, with notes and remarks of Inigo Jones . London: 1742. 2 volumes in one, 2 (457 x 288mm). Engraved allegorical frontispiece by B. Picart after Sebastiano Riccio, engraved portrait of the author by Picart after Paolo Veronese 215 engravings on 207 leaves, 15 double-page, by John Harris, Bernard Picart Michael Vandergucht and John Cole (Old, neat repair to marginal tear to C1, some spotting to L-M, X-Y, and 2E 2F-2G.) 18th-century speckled calf (upper cover detached, extremities rubbed). Provenance : Minster Acres Library (shelf label). This edition contains the 'notes and remarks of Inigo Jones', which although promised in the first edition, appeared neither in that nor the second. At the time of publication of the first and second editions Jones's copy of Palladio's I Quattro Libri , the annotations in which were the source of the so-called 'notes and remarks', was in the possession of Dr George Clarke a fellow of All Souls, Oxford, MP for the University, and an amateur architect. In 1736 Clarke died, whereupon Jones's copy of Palladio passed to Worcester College, which, with the new 'proprieters' of the English edition, allowed Leoni to copy Jones's notes, and Leoni was able to include them in the third edition. This edition also contains Palladio's Antiquities of Rome and Discourse on the Fires of the Ancients , translated from the Latin of Charles Fairfax or the French of Pompe de Launay. Harris 685; this edition not in Fowler.
