Sabalites sp., Diplomystus dentatus Eocene Green River Formation, Wyoming Over fifty million years ago, the desert sediments of Southwest Wyoming lay under a freshwater lake system within the subtropical environment of the Eocene. Similar in climate to modern-day Florida, the area supported an abundance of fishes, turtles, crocodiles and other aquatic creatures. Considered rare, and arguably the most spectacular examples of the flora of the period, are the Green River palm fronds, distinctive reminders of the primitive and beautiful Eocene environment. The present example, a partial palm frond on irregularly-shaped matrix, makes a unique decorative presentation, augmented by one fossil fish, Diplomystus dentatus, and the beautiful cream and gray tones of the limestone matrix. Backed with birch and fitted with a French cleat for effortless wall display. Measures 42 1/2 x 28in; Specimen measures 12in.
