Also, includes three other 3x4¼" gelatin silver print snapshot photographs of the same devastated area as seen in the panorama. On September 17, 1923, a large fire spread throughout the Wildcat Canyon region (today Tilden Park) in highly populated parts of North Berkeley, California. The devastating fire reached as far as Hearst Street on the south end, Shattuck Avenue in the west. The Berkeley Fire Department were undermanned and under-equipped to handle such an enormous blaze, so Chief G. Sydney Rose received help from the other stations in Oakland, Richmond, Emeryville, Piedmont and San Francisco. The San Francisco units, arriving by ferry about 90 minutes after they were called, stationed themselves at University and Shattuck Avenues and were credited with saving downtown. The conflagration resulted in no deaths or serious injuries, but it destroyed 584 buildings and seriously damaged many others. The total economic loss was around $10,000,000 and approximately 4000 people were left homeless. The city government and Red Cross struggled to find temporary quarters for the homeless, and in a reversal of the 1906 experience, many were able to find shelter in San Francisco. The fire's erratic course can still be easily charted by walking on the streets north of the UC campus. Lot Amendments Condition: Mild soiling and other minor wear; near fine. Item number: 157780
