(Plate 172 with a long repaired tear, plate 200 with repaired loss in the bottom margin touching the corner of the engraving, some small marginal repairs, occasional light browning and light marginal soiling.) Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments and with raised bands, red morocco label (spine head with short tear, extremities rubbed, sides heavily scuffed). Provenance : Friedrich August II, King of Saxony (1797-1854; bookplate) – Dresden Central Art Library (stamp on plate versos). FIRST EDITION. KING FRIEDRICH AUGUST II’S COPY of this rare book of costumes for various theatrical performances, including masques and Opera. ABPC and RBH record no copy sold or offered at auction. WorldCat records just four copies worldwide: National Art Library, Brown University, Erfurt and Dresden; all of which are described with less plates (204 or 205), and most likely lacking the three final plates of figures on horseback found in this copy and also noted in Lipperheide. According to Lipperheide the present work is based on Johann Messelreuter’s Neu-eröffneter Masqven-Saal (Bayreuth: 1723), which is itself not recorded in ABPC and RBH.
