Additional tinted engraved pictorial title-page and tinted engraved frontispiece after Darley by Childs. 2-page publisher's advertisement at front and 4-page publisher's advertisements at end. (Some occasional foxing.) Original brown blind-stamped cloth, spine gilt-stamped (some fading and minor wear); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : T.W. Coit (signature on front free endpaper). FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING OF PARKMAN'S FIRST BOOK. Journeying across the plains to Fort Laramie in order to regain his health, Parkman observed the customs of the American Indian and, upon his return, wrote "...the classic account of the emigrant journey to the Rockies" (Grolier American 58).
