'Although the principal feature of the work is a description of the botanical specimens ... there are many interesting notes respecting the natives, with a few remarks on the Dutch colonists' (Mendelssohn). Paterson was later appointed governor of New South Wales but 'historians have rightly judged him more important as a natural scientist than as an administrator' (ODNB).
