The model in the present work has been identified as Jon Farquhar Anderson (1937-2018), a former singer and actor and Cadmus' lover. Cadmus and Anderson met in 1965 and began a relationship that lasted until Cadmus' death in 1999. Throughout their relationship, Anderson served as Cadmus' model and muse, appearing in an exhaustive portion of Cadmus' oeuvre. Often times, Cadmus used the inscription 'NM' in his signature followed by a number as part of a self-kept inventory system. The 'NM' stood for 'Nantucket Man' and is a reference to Nantucket, Massachusetts where the couple met.
